The Course

5.30AM SUNDAY 24 Nov 2019
128km 2218m Ascent
Taking in some of the most breathtaking views of the Sunshine Coast the Cycle Sunshine Gran Fondo course is spectacular.

Turning south after crossing the start line head towards the beautiful Maroochy River. Take in the stunning views towards the coast line as you cross the bridge on the dedicated cycle pathway, following the river inland before turning westward at the famous Erbachers Fruit & Vegetable store. From here you’ll encounter small undulating hills and shaded tree-lined roads. Passing through Edulo Creek National Park you’ll find your first step pinch as you head towards Mooloolah Valley, warming the legs for what’s to come.

Roll through historic Landsborough, settled in 1871 and originally known as Mellum Creek, this quaint country town was a stopping point for Cobb & Co on the route from Brisbane to the new goldfields at Gympie. The Landsborough Pub is a well known weekend tourist destination for a traditional pub lunch and a schooner or two.

9km out of Landsborough the route turns onto Peachester Road and 3km further in you’ll begin your first long climb. Settle in and grind it out before being rewarded at Peachester with the first of two gourmet nutrition and hydration stations. Fuel up here, the next 15km to the top of Balmoral Ridge will be tough as you gain a total of 300m of elevation.

Turning onto the Maleny-Montville Road you’ll pass the iconic Maleny cheese factory and roll across the undulating ridge line that takes you along the tourist route through Montville with its glorious views of the Sunshine Coast & Hinterland and on to Mapleton where your second gourmet food stop awaits.

Swoop down the range and through the town of Nambour, staying in touch with your team mates as you approach the final stages of this ride.

Leaving Nambour on backroads, be prepared for two small pinches before hitting the coastal planes again. The route returns via Erbachers corner, turning left to take in the Bli Bli Sunshine Castle and crossing the Maroochy River via the Bli Bli bridge.

A flat, fast finish in towards Mujimba, turning into the slip road at Sunset Boulevard and return past the front of Surfair Hotel to the cheers of your support team as you cross the finish line with your team mates. Continue through to the beach access pathway where you can roll through to re-rack your bikes and head on into Surfair Hotel to rehydrate, refuel and relive the ride. Presentations will be held on the lawn at Surfair from 12.30pm. Afterwards, enjoy your accomodation, relax poolside, or take a swim in the surf. Maybe just book for the entire week and enjoy the blissed out, laid-back summer vibe of Marcoola Beach.
